MAYOR'S ANNOUNCEMENTS

Minutes:

The Mayor held a minutes silence in memory of the friends and colleagues that were sadly lost during the Mayoral year - Derik Brooks, Citizen of Honour; Andrew Cossey, Alderman; June Hughes, Past Mayor and Alderman and Ann Woods, Past Mayoress.

 

The Mayor thanked the retiring Councillors – Sarah Bain, Mark Balaam, Haulwen Broadhurst, Daniel Hatfield, Pamela Holden-Brown, Elizabeth Lear, Clifford Morris, Angel Myerscough and Angela Roling.

 

The Chief Executive extended thanks to the Mayor, Mrs Sollitt, who was also retiring.

 

The Mayor also thanked and offered commiserations to those Councillors that were not re-elected at this time and welcomed all of the newly elected Borough Councillors.

 

The Mayor advised that One Community were celebrating their 40th Anniversary this year and had set Forty Challenge which ranged from donating used to stamps to donating £40,000 for a mini bus. The Mayor encouraged guests to take part. In addition, nominations for the Mayor’s Youth Awards for volunteering, supported by One Community and Eastleigh Lions, closed on Friday 18 May.

ELECTION OF MAYOR

To elect a Mayor to hold office until the annual meeting of the Council in 2019. The Mayor will then make and subscribe the declaration of acceptance of office.

Minutes:

RESOLVED –

 

That Councillor Bruce Tennent be elected Mayor of the Borough for the ensuing municipal year and until acceptance of office by his successor.

 

Councillor Tennent then subscribed his declaration of acceptance of office. The new Mayoress, Mrs Maria Tennent, was invested with her badge of office and the Mayor then addressed the Council.

 

3.

VOTE OF THANKS

To record a vote of thanks to the retiring Mayor.

Minutes:

RESOLVED -

 

That the best thanks of this Council be extended to Mrs Maureen Sollitt and Mr Roy Sollitt for the admirable way in which they have carried out their duties of Mayor and Mayor’s Escort during the past year.

 

Mrs Sollitt suitably replied to the vote of thanks. The Mayor and the Mayoress then presented badges to Mrs Maureen Sollitt and Mr Roy Sollitt to mark their year of service to the Borough as Mayor and Mayor’s Escort.

4.

ELECTION OF DEPUTY MAYOR

To elect a Deputy Mayor to hold office until the annual meeting of the Council in 2019.

Minutes:

RESOLVED –

 

That Councillor Darshan Mann be elected Deputy Mayor of the Borough for the ensuing municipal year and until acceptance of office by his successor.

 

Councillor Mann then subscribed his declaration of acceptance of office.

5.

MAYORS CHAPLAIN

The Mayor to indicate appointment of Chaplain.

Minutes:

The Mayor signified in writing the appointment of Dr Nigel Paterson as his Chaplain. The meeting stood whilst Dr Nigel Paterson offered a prayer.

6.

HONORARY ALDERMAN PRESENTATION

The Mayor to confer Honorary Alderman awards.

Minutes:

The Chief executive read the resolution of the Council that all ex-Members that had served as a Councillor for the 12 years or longer and were not actively seeking re-election be formally invited to accept the award of Honorary Alderman.

 

The title of Honorary Alderman was presented to Haulwen Broadhurst, Pamela Holden-Brown, Maureen Sollitt and Angela Roling. The Chief Executive explained that Angela Roling was unable to attend the meeting so Anne Winstanley collected this on her behalf.

 

A posthumous award was also awarded to Roger Smith. As Roger’s wife, Sheila, was unable to attend, Philip Spearey collected the award on his behalf.
