MAYOR'S ANNOUNCEMENTS

Minutes:

The Mayor held a minute’s silence in memory of the friends and colleagues that were sadly lost during the Mayoral year:

 

  Godfrey Olson OBE – Freemen, Past Mayor & Alderman

  Tony Balcombe Citizen of Honour

  Patricia Bowles Past Mayoress

  Colin Bull - Alderman

  Len Welsh - Mayor’s Escort 1999/2000 and 2015/2016

 

Thanks were given to retiring Borough Councillor Adrian Trace. The Mayor also extended thanks and commiserations to those Councillors that were not re-elected and welcomed all the newly elected Borough Councillors.

 

The Mayor advised that a letter of condolence was sent to Her Majesty The Queen on behalf of the people of Eastleigh Borough and the Council, expressing our deep sadness. A letter of thanks was received on behalf of Her Majesty.

 

He also advised that Volunteers Week takes place from 31 May to 6 June. Eastleigh Basics Bank is marking a decade of helping local residents by saying a Big Thank You to the many people who have provided support over the years – and helped them give out enough food to feed 25,000 people for one week since opening in 2011.

 

Running events are returning, along with twelve weeks of Summer Socials at The Point and live music on Eastleigh Bandstand.

71.

ELECTION OF MAYOR

To elect a Mayor to hold office until the annual meeting of the Council in 2022. The Mayor will then make and subscribe the declaration of acceptance of office.

 

Minutes:

RESOLVED –

 

That Councillor Cynthia Garton be elected Mayor of the Borough for the ensuing municipal year and until acceptance of office by her successor.

 

Councillor Cynthia Garton then subscribed her declaration of acceptance of office. The new Mayor’s escort, Councillor Derek Pretty, was invested with his badge of office and the Mayor then addressed the Council.

 

 

72.

VOTE OF THANKS

To record a vote of thanks to the retiring Mayor.

Minutes:

RESOLVED

 

That the best thanks of this Council be extended to Councillor Darshan Mann and Mrs Dalip Mann for the admirable way in which they have carried out their duties of Mayor and Mayoress during the past year.


Councillor Mann suitably replied to the vote of thanks. Badges were presented to Councillor Mann and Mrs Mann to mark their two years of service to the Borough as Mayor and Mayoress.

73.

ELECTION OF DEPUTY MAYOR

To elect a Deputy Mayor to hold office until the annual meeting of the Council in 2022.

Minutes:

RESOLVED

 

That Councillor Adam Manning be elected Deputy Mayor of the Borough for the ensuing municipal year and until acceptance of office by his successor.

 

Councillor Adam Manning then subscribed his declaration of acceptance of office. The new Deputy Mayoress, Mrs Alison Manning, was invested with her badge of office.

APPOINTMENT OF MAYOR'S CHAPLAIN

The Mayor to indicate appointment of Chaplain.

 

Minutes:

The Mayor signified in writing the appointment of Reverend Iain MacFarlane as her Chaplain. The meeting remained seated whilst Reverend MacFarlane offered a prayer.

CONFERMENT OF CITIZEN OF HONOUR pdf icon PDF 168 KB

The Mayor to confer Citizen of Honour awards. Presentation to take place at a later date.

Minutes:

The Chief Executive read the resolution of the Council conferring the title of Citizen of Honour on Stan Newell, Melanie Phillips and Pat Statham.

 

As part of the Borough’s fiftieth anniversary celebrations in 1986, the Council created the award of Citizen of Honour; the award generally being made to people who had given long and exceptional service to their local community.  This year’s recipients were:

 

·  Stan Newell for services to the community and the Netley and Hamble

Branch of the Royal British Legion.

·  Melanie Phillips for encouraging recycling and raising money for Kicks

Count.

·  Pat Statham for services to the community.

 

The Mayor explained that presentations will be done at a later date when Covid restrictions ease further.

 

76.

CONFERMENT OF HONORARY ALDERMAN

The Mayor to confer Honorary Alderman awards. Presentation to take place at a later date.

 

Minutes:

The Chief Executive read the resolution of the Council that all ex-Members that had served as a Councillor for 12 years or longer and were not actively seeking re-election be formally invited to accept the award of Honorary Alderman.

 

The Mayor then conferred the title of Honorary Alderman on Steve Sollitt, Trevor Mignot, Mike Thornton and Chris Thomas.

 

The Chief Executive explained that they will be presented with their Alderman awards when Covid restrictions have eased further.

Minutes:

The Mayor reported the election results as stated in Paper A.

 

The Mayor then collectively congratulated all members elected and welcomed the Members who were newly elected to the Borough Council.

 

Thanks were given to those Councillors who had retired for all their work during their time on the Council.
